The practice often receives requests over telephone or email for a prescription renewal. A prescription is a document signed off by a medical doctor. It is the duty of the medical doctor prescribing medication to verify the medication, doses, contra-indications and recent changes in the patient’s health profile which may negate certain medication. A file needs to be reviewed. Previous medical problems and annual blood tests need to be reviewed. In certain conditions eg: Diabetes, the patient needs to have blood tests done every 3 months to evaluate if the prescription needs to be changed. Repeat prescriptions for chronic conditions will not be issued. Patients with chronic medical conditions need a six month review with a medical doctor before that prescription can be renewed.
It is the duty of a patient with a chronic condition to be aware of when his/her medication has run out. Often you pharmacist will inform you when you are collecting your 5th out of 6 prescription medication supply that you need to book to see you doctor for the next prescription renewal. In addition chronic medication is often labelled: 1 out of 6 OR 2 out of 6. This is another remainder for the patient to see his/her doctor in 6 months.
Acute medication eg antibiotics are only prescribed following a medical examination.
